Tragedy in Agbor: Tanker Explosion Claims Lives and Destroys Buildings Opposite First Bank
Agbor, Delta State, was thrown into chaos last year December when a fully loaded diesel tanker exploded around 4:45 PM on a Sunday evening. The tragic incident happened directly opposite First Bank along the Old Lagos–Asaba Road, leaving the entire community in shock.
According to reports gathered by ok Naijajistreal96.com.ng, the tanker, which was heading towards Asaba, suddenly lost its brakes while attempting to make a turn. It toppled over, spilling its content and igniting a massive explosion that engulfed nearby buildings and vehicles in flames.
Eyewitnesses recounted how the fire raged uncontrollably, destroying several properties, including the First Bank building, shops, and nearby structures. Sadly, four lives were lost, including the tanker driver and his assistant, while at least three others sustained serious burn injuries.
The explosion caused panic in the area as residents and business owners watched helplessly, unable to salvage their belongings before the inferno consumed everything. Firefighters and emergency responders later arrived at the scene, but by then, significant damage had already been done.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and promised that the government would investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Community leaders have also called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations on heavy-duty vehicles plying the Lagos–Asaba route to prevent future disasters.
