In the early hours of Monday, massive floods have struck parts of Niger and Kogi States, leaving a trail of destruction, displacement, and heartbreak. Over 60 people are feared dead, with dozens missing, following two days of relentless rainfall and the bursting of the Jebba Dam, which overflowed into several riverine communities.

According to officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the affected areas include Lokoja, New Bussa, and Agaie, where homes, farmlands, and markets have been washed away.

“This is the worst flooding we’ve experienced since 2022. The water rose above rooftops in some places. We’re still counting casualties,” said Ibrahim Danjuma, a NEMA field officer.

Rescue teams have been deployed, with boats and helicopters sent from the Nigerian Army and Civil Defence to evacuate trapped residents. However, emergency personnel complain of fuel shortages and blocked access roads, slowing down aid to remote communities.

In a disturbing video shared on social media, women and children can be seen wading through waist-deep water while holding bags on their heads. Some survivors were rescued from rooftops after waving cloths to draw attention.

The floods have destroyed thousands of hectares of farmland, worsening the existing food crisis in the country. Rice paddies, maize fields, and cassava farms were completely submerged.

“This was our only hope for harvest this year. We’ve lost everything,” lamented Mary Okon, a widow and farmer in Koton Karfe.

🏛 Government Response

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in the affected states and promised immediate federal intervention.

“We are mobilizing all available resources to assist our fellow Nigerians. No life is less important,” the President stated during a press briefing.

Relief materials including mattresses, water purifiers, and food supplies are being coordinated through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
