In the early hours of Monday, a tragic road accident occurred along the ever-busy Ikorodu Road in Lagos, leaving one person dead and three others critically injured. The collision involved a commercial Danfo bus and a private Toyota Corolla reportedly speeding to beat the early morning rush.

Eyewitnesses say the accident happened around 5:30 am near the Ojota underbridge. According to an onlooker, the Danfo bus was trying to overtake a slow-moving trailer when it lost control and rammed head-on into the Toyota.

"I heard a loud bang, and when I rushed out, I saw blood everywhere. The bus was crushed in the front," said Chukwuma, a roadside food vendor.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded promptly and confirmed the incident. "We arrived at the scene within minutes. Unfortunately, one person—a male passenger from the private car—was already dead. Three others have been taken to the General Hospital for urgent treatment," said LASEMA spokesperson Tunji Adedayo.

Speeding and Poor Visibility Blamed

Officials blame excessive speeding and poor early morning visibility as likely causes of the crash. The road was also said to be slippery due to overnight rain, making it more difficult for vehicles to maneuver safely.

This incident adds to the increasing number of road accidents in Lagos this year, especially during early morning hours. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has repeatedly warned drivers about reckless driving and has emphasized the importance of routine vehicle checks.

Government's Response

In response to the accident, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Dolapo Awokoya, urged commuters and commercial drivers to prioritize safety over speed. "This unfortunate event is another reminder that lives can be lost in seconds due to carelessness. We are increasing patrols and safety awareness campaigns around black spots like Ojota," he said.

Public Reaction
